Whole30 Day 8

So today we woke up early to get ourselves organized and out the door by 8am. My hubby and I both being Massage Therapists, were taking a course together on Nociceptors and why people feel pain. I had to get the kids organized as my parents were watching them for the day. This meant organizing bottles, lunch, dinner, a list of nap/feed times and get them up with breakfast in their bellies. I also wanted to tidy the kitchen and empty the dishwasher, do my face, get dressed, do my hair, organize my INSANELY large mountain of food and fill a diaper bag incase they went out. Well we got it done and had a little bit of time to get some breaky in ourselves. I had two pouched eggs, a few pieces of smoked salmon and veggie.
We got away a little late but it was all good because we made it to our course with 10 minutes to spare. We popped in to a coffee shop and I decided that this morning I was going to try an iced coffee. I don't drink cofffe, I don't like coffee, but I felt I needed something. I haven't been working for 8 months ( because I"m on matleave after having my son), I haven't been to a course or school in a couple years and on top of that most of my days are filled with baby/toddler talk....this was going to be a tough day mentally.
We then headed up to the conference room to start the lecture. The talk started and within 30 minutes I could feel my brain starting to spin, but I hung tight and eventually what the lecturer was saying started to absorb. I drank about 3/4 of the coffee and had a bunch of carrot, pepper, and peas while the first half of the day was in session. At lunch break, I was so desperate to go to the washroom. I couldn't believe how much my pee smelt of coffee. It's like I had just brewed another pot! It was incredible. Something I've never experience because I don't drink coffee.
We joined some collegues for lunch as well as the lecturer. We went to Banana Leaf. The best thing on the menu I could find was a lettuce wrap and it was pretty good. I'm pretty sure it had soy sauce and sesame oil in it, but I figured that was pretty good compared to the other options. I didn't realize these ingredients were in it until I ate it. Looking back I could have asked them not to use either, I'll know for next time.
The lecture was done at 5pm and we were in a rush to get home, as my dad (Bubba) needed to catch a flight. My parents said the kids had been awesome all day. M had had one good nap and one ok nap which was great. They said he didn't cry at all and ate like a champ. S was great as well. I worried she might be cranky as she had had a late night the night before with Meme and Poppa.
Once Nana and Bubba had left we got the kids ready for bed. S was pretty easy to convince seeing as her first day of preschool is tomorrow and she's so excited! M fussed a little but fell asleep pretty quickly. Hubby and I sat down to a plate of left overs. We had ribs, roast, roast root veg and carrots/peppers. I had a blueberry seltzer which I really enjoyed and hubby's beer didn't bother me.
It is now 945pm. I am going to get S's stuff ready for her first day of preschool tomorrow and then I will call it a night. My brain hurts from all the information I tried to stuff in it today and I'm exhausted.
Here's to tomorrow Day 9.

Whole30 Day 7

Day 7 was a pretty good day, even though I can't seem to kick the cravings yet. I woke up a little less foggy then the day before. I think my fogginess has something to do with the fact that I don't get a full nights sleep these days because M has decided since having a cold that he needs to wake up in the night for a bottle. I guess he's having to make up his calories that he lost while sick. So hopefully the full nights sleep are coming soon.
My hubby did get up with the kids to give me a little bit longer in bed which was nice. Once up, I had two scrambled eggs and some veggie before getting dressed. S and I were going to our last local market for the season, so we were super excited to get out the door at 10am. We left daddy and M at home; daddy had some work to do and M needed a nap. So S and I got to spend some special time together enjoying the market.
We first went to the pepper truck. We get to fill a bag with as many peppers as possible for $4....we fit 8 in the bag. Pretty awesome deal. We also picked up a bag of tomatoes. We then slowly made our way past all sorts of awesome vendors to the curry guy. They make amazing curry sauces in a jar that have no added anything. There is no sugar added, no MSG, no preservatives, nothing, just fruit, veggie and spices. They are so to dye for! We bought a Vindaloo, mango curry and a masala. I am definitely trying prawns in the masala this week....mmm. After visiting the curry man and S having a taste of his chickpea curry (which she loves and gets every market from him) we were off to find Cropthorne, the farm we get our weekly veggie basket from. Unfortunately, they weren't at this market. So we had to get our carrots from another farm vendor. 1 bunch (about 10 carrots) for $1.50. Again so awesome! By this time S had been super good and had asked if she could have a muffin. I decided she could pick a cookie. She chose peanut butter chocolate chip and devoured the whole thing. We also picked up a individual apple pie for daddy because they are his favorite and individual meant I wouldn't have any. We were pretty much done by this point so we slowly made our way back glancing in on all the vendors as we went.
Once home, S gave daddy his apple pie and told him about all the friends we had seen while at the market. We got to meet a friends new little boy and S's friends new baby brother, which was very exciting. We then fixed lunch. S told me she wanted a PB sandwich and that she was tired and would go for a nap after lunch. Unfortunately the nap never materialized. Lunch for me was a can of sardines and veggies.
As the afternoon proceeded I couldn't seem to fill myself. My appetite was huge. I ate tons of carrots, peppers, peas, macadamia nuts, a hard-boiled egg, ribs from the night before and nothing satisfied my hunger. I found this very frustrating and tried my best to ignore my tummy.
By 3pm my in-laws had arrived. We had invited them over because it was Grandparent day and we wanted to spend the afternoon and evening with them. We had invited my parents as well but they were over visiting my nana on the island and didn't make it back in time. S and M had a good play with their Meme and Poppa while I did some laundry and tidied the kitchen a bit. By this time my hubby was home from his meeting and we started to prepare dinner.
Dinner was amazing. We had a great roast that my husband had rubbed in the same spicy dry rub he had done on the ribs the night before. He put all the roast veggies we had cut up in a roasting pan and put the roast on top. I put a pot of yams on the stove and dinner was cookn'.
The roast veggie all came from either our garden (summer squash, hubbard squash, kuri squash) or from the farm we coop through (golden beets, potatoe)...so nice to be eating basically all from our backyard. Cropthorne the farm we get veggie from is behind the house across the street from us. So really everything is from less then a KM away.
Once dinner was done, we got S off to dinner, but not before one more story from her Poppa. We then chatted a little before Meme and Poppa left and we cleaned up. I had wanted to call it a night at this point because both my hubby and I were attending a course in the morning, but I had to go to Superstore to try and find S a backpack and slippers for school. The shopping tripped ended up being pointless as they didn't have what I was looking for. That meant it was time for bed.
All in all it was a great day. Just wish I could have gotten a handle on my hunger.
On to Day 8

Whole30 Day 6

Day 6 was definitely better then Day 5 but still not a great day for cravings. We had a fabulous time as a family though. We were up early because our little man couldn't breath through his nose and was having a hard time sleeping. We pulled him into our bed gave him some saline and managed to get another 2 hours out of him before my daughter stormed into the room wanting to know why her brother didn't sleep with her in their room. This is the start many tantrums these days. If she wakes up and he isn't in his crib, she is convinced he didn't sleep in the room and she gets very mad. I have to try and convince her that I only came in and got him this morning to give him his bottle as not to wake her. Sometimes she believes me and other days it's a massive melt down. This morning lucky we moved quickly into having some food.
So at 8 I made her cheerios and sat myself on the couch to try and wake up. I woke up foggy again today. Not sure if it partly has to do with M not sleeping through the night and having to get up and give him a bottle?
By 9, the whole family was up and I made scrambled eggs with yellow pepper, shallot and hot pepper this morning. Everyone else had toast but I had yellow pepper, avocado and raspberries. The raspberries were frozen (ones we had picked earlier this summer) and tasted like candy to me! They were amazing. I love things frozen, especially chocolate but that's going to change hopefully. Positive thinking.
After breakfast we got sorted quickly and made it to the farm by 1030am. Today, was A Day At The Farm day. So much fun. We met my sister and her family and another family there. We got to see how a cow is milked and how a calf is fed. We then got to go on a hayride around the farm and see all the crops and learn about farming. After the hayride we walked passed all the farm animals; milk cows, beef cows, a huge clydesdale horse, goats, chickens and even a donkey. So much fun seeing all the animals. We had a bit of a dance and then checked out all the vendors. There were lots of birds and ducks to see and learn about as well as how to make honey from bees. We already know and love the honey man but we stopped at his booth to say hi and inquire about what size honey pots he was selling. We go through honey quickly in this family and need the big pot which he didn't have. So we knew on the way home we would stop in to his house to visit the honey woman and get some honey! By this time it was 1230pm. So we decided to leave. We got to enjoy all that and got two bags of about 7 golden beets each for FREE. Going to A day at the farm is so worth it!
On our way home we had two stops first the honey woman and second our local farm stand for farm fresh eggs. The honey woman was excited to see us. We told her we had seen her husband earlier and he had sent us her way to get large pots of honey. This is where I messed up totally by accident. You see, we visit the honey family all the time, every couple months to get  honey. So I have become accustomed to the routine of it. We get to taste a couple of the honeys and then we choose which ones we want and that's it. Well that's what happened first we tasted the buckwheat/alfalfa honey and then the zucchini honey. It wasn't until I had the zucchini honey in my mouth that I realized what I was doing and realized I CAN'T HAVE HONEY! SHIT. By this time I was on one huge sugar rush. So I screwed up today and I feel terrible! We left with a zucchini honey for ourselves and a raspberry honey for my in-laws.
After the honey situation we stopped in at the farm stand  and got 2 1/2 dozen eggs. Then home. I love coming home when we are tired, it feels so good. S wanted a honey sandwich before her nap. I made that put the eggs and beets in the fridge and then decided it was VERY important that I go out immediately and get some soda water and pure blueberry juice. We have a local farm that makes blueberry juice with nothing but blueberries. There is not added sugar, water or anything. So I left my hubby to put S down (M was already asleep) and headed to the grocery store. I bought a few things but was very excited to get home for a blueberry seltzer. Which was delicious! I had my seltzer with a can of wild sockeye salmon and cucumber.
At 4pm the kids were waking up from their naps and we were getting organized to go to my sister's for dinner. The plan was to have a bit of a rib-off. My hubby was doing a dry rub for me and my brother-in-law was doing BBQ ribs. The boys started into it with their beers and ribs while the kids played and my sister and I sorted the sides. We ended up having potatoes from the farm, salad with red pepper, cucumber, craisins, apple and goat cheese in it. I was everything minus the goat cheese. Dinner was AMAZING. The dry rub was awesome, and a fairly spicy which we love. YUMMY.
We stayed for a little bit after dinner but were home by 9pm putting the babies to bed.
Today was a great day but still all day I craved everything. I was desperate again to have my diet coke and I so wanted to have some kind of candy either a gummy or chocolate. I even wanted my daughters ice cream and I'm not a huge ice cream fan. UGH! I hope tomorrow the craves are better because it feels like torture right now. Especially wanting my husband enjoy his beer while I had a soda water. I LOVE BEER. No I can do this. I'm strong, I can do this!
Here's to tomorrow and Day 7, the end of a very long week.

ps. Our parents made an amazing offer tonight: They want to switch houses in a couple weeks for the whole weekend and they want to keep the KIDS! Seriously, for two whole nights we would be kid free. From Friday to Sunday afternoon! We have never had that, we've only had a night. What would we do with ourselves? I'm so excited. The only down fall is I won't be through my 30 days, so I won't be able to enjoy a glass of wine with my hubby to toast our great escape. What to do? Should we ask to change the date to a few weeks later, so that I can have a glass of wine? or just suck it up and do it in a couple weeks time? Things to mull over. We have the most WONDERFUL families in the whole world. We love them all so much and are so lucky to have every single one of them. Will let you know in a future post what we do.

Whole30 Day 5

Well they might say Day 4 is the worst day but Day 5 was definitely my worst day so far. After having the day I had on Thursday it was brutal to wake up the next morning to a foggy head and grouchy mood. From the first few minutes with S I was very impatient and the day didnt' get much better.
We ate breakfast about 7am. S with her cereal and I had 2 hard-boiled eggs, yellow pepper and half an avocado. My mom stopped in around 1030am which was nice. She broke up the stale grouchy atmosphere in the house. S and M love her so much and get so excited to see her. She was a huge help because I had to get a picnic organized, as we were meeting my sister and her family at the park for a play and a picnic. Ever time I opened the fridge I wanted everything in it. I wanted the icing, the pop, the bread, the PB sandwich that I was making S for lunch. I was also desperate from my large McDonalds Diet Coke. All I could think was that would make everything better! I knew this wasn't true and I wasn't going to get one but that didn't help the situation.
Once lunch was packed, we said good bye to Nana and headed to Auntie K's house. We packed the strollers and made our way with the kids to the park. We had a swing and then decided it was time for some lunch. S had her PB sandwich and some apple and pear and one of my hard-boiled eggs. She then felt she was ready to play again, but unfortunately the play didn't get any better. S and P still struggled to play. So we packed up the kids and walked to the bank and grocery store. I was on the hunt for coconut aminos, which I couldn't find unfortunately. I'll have to search for it. While in the grocery store I wanted everything. I wanted the baked beans in the asian aisle. I wanted any cereal in the cereal aisle. I wanted
We then went back to Auntie K's house and the kids watch a movie for a little bit of down time and to get out of the heat. The past few days have been incredibly hot, especially for a September day. We are loving it. We watched Tangled which we all enjoyed. After the movie we headed home because both S and M needed to have naps before going go that night for dinner with friends who were in town.
This is where the really hard part begins. We all had a smaller dinner because we were going out for dinner with some friends. Shae had grilled cheese sandwich with some fruit and I had two hard-boiled eggs with some veggie. Not alot of food but satisfying enough to get me through until later that night.
My hubby picked us up at 7pm and we headed downtown. By 8pm we were sitting at the restaurant talking with old friends. My hubby ordered a beer and I ordered a soda water with lemon, not the same but I tried not to let it get to me. By this time I was quite hungry and feeling my inner demon on the rise. We had met at a BBQ house which I wasn't impressed with and was a little hesitate to look at the menu. Sure enough there was nothing on the menu I could order! Everything was covered in BBQ sauce and couldn't come without it. All the sides were coleslaw and bakcd beans. I became very irritated at this and very frustrated with my hubby who knew my eating requirements. I had been told we were trying to find a chicken and salad restaurant. After about 10 minutes I looked at the menu again and decided I could order the only salad on the menu, a cobb salad that came with; blue cheese, guacamole, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoe, brisket and pulled pork, and dressing. So I ordered the salad without the meat, cheese and inquired about replacing the salad dressing with plain balsalmic vinegar. This was not possible. The only had a premixed dressing and no substitute. I was VERY disappointed but I ate the salad dry. It wasn't very good and I was grumpy eating it, as my hubby had a brisket sandwich and corn bread (one of my favorites). But I pulled through and afterwards felt alot better for putting food in my stomache. So the whole dinner I craved everything; beer, coleslaw, baked beans, wine, pulled pork, BBQ sauce...but I made it through.
At 10pm my daughter wanted to leave. She asked if we could go home. We were under the impression that our friends were bringing their son but they didn't. So she was disappointed and tired. We settled our bill and started on our way home. The entire drive home I had to talk myself out of going through the McDonald's drive thru and getting my large Diet Coke. I was frustrated with the evening and tired and desperately wanting my fix! But, I focused on the road and turned the music up and got us home without one.
Once home we all immediately went to bed. I needed the day to be over! To stop the cravings and feel better.
Here's to a better Day 6.

Whole30 Day 4

Day 4 was a great day. I was feeling awesome. I had heard that day 4 is supposed to be really hard and so I am super excited that I felt as good as I did. I woke up alert and ready for my day. I still woke up earlier then I like but I was awake and clear. S and I had a great day with very little disagreement. We got to play with lots of our friends and enjoy some wonderful sunshine. I love september.
The day started at 630am with S waking up. I made her rice crispies and made myself a 2 egg scramble with yellow pepper and shallot along with yellow pepper, avocado and grapefruit. After breaky S and I got ready because we were going to a playdate at a friends house. S had a great play and I had a great talk with my friend MB.
After the playdate we headed home because my hubby had to get to work. We ate our lunch. S had a PB sandwich, apple, pear and raspberries and I finished the leftovers from my Moroccan chicken dish. So yummy! We then woke M from his nap and headed to my hubby's work. My mother-in-law had come as well to watch the kids while I gave him a much needed massage. We are both RMT's (registered massage therapists), he has been working so hard because I'm on mat leave. So the least I can do is give him a massage to help keep his body strong.
We headed to my sister's after this. My sister has two kids her eldest P is S's best friend they are only 16 days apart and L is her daughter and her first birthday is next week. The kids had a fun time, so we stayed for dinner. K, my sister was so great for having us. She made cucumber maki sushi and BBQ'd chicken on the BBQ. S loved it all and everything disappeared. M towards the end of the dinner was starting to fade from such a full day of fun. So I knew I needed to get the kids home quickly.
After we helped tidying Auntie K's house we jumped in the car and headed home for the end of the day. M was already asleep in his carseat by the time we drove the 3 minutes to get home. I put him in bed and I promised S that if she got into her PJ's quickly and quietly, she could stay up and wait for Auntie C ( one of my good girlfriends) to come over. S loves most of my good friends and she gets so excited to see them all. Auntie's C and L were both coming over for a dinner playdate with mommy. I was so looking forward to sometime with my girlfriends. C had said she would make dinner, which was awesome. She brought cod and did an oil ginger sautee with some bock choy, quinoa and salad. I had to alter my meal a little but it was super easy to do. I didn't have the quinoa and made a seperate salad that excluded pine nuts, goat cheese and a balsamic reduction. Everything was delicious! Thank you C for making dinner.
After dinner we had a great chat and caught up. By 10am we were all tired and parted ways. I put a movie on and waited for my hubby to get home. At 1130pm, we called it quits and headed to bed. What a great day! Here's hoping the rest of my days go this fantastically.
On to Day 5.

Whole30 Day 3

Day 3 was a fun filled day. It started again way too early at 6am with my little man, doesn't he know that mommy doens't like getting up before 730am. Even though I had to get up so early this morning I was actually feeling pretty clear. This is a new feeling for me as for months now I have been in a fog all day everyday. I think this might be part of the reason S and I haven't been getting along too well. I feel like because I wake up in a fog I am incredibly impatient and unreasonable and resort to yelling way too quickly. This morning, I felt I had a bit more patients, a was a bit more reasonable and didn't yell most of the morning, except for when she hurt her brother.
For breakfast I again had two scrambled eggs with yellow pepper and shallot along with pepper and avocado. After I had half a grapefruit, yum!
We had lots of fun playing all morning. S has been really into colouring and puzzles lately. She's getting so good at both! She now can almost completely stay in the lines while colouring which I find incredible and some of her puzzles she can complete by herself.
When lunch rolled around I was feeling a little tired and uninspired. I found it difficult to make lunch, but I knew I needed to have a good lunch as we were heading out for the afternoon and wouldn't be eating dinner till 6ish. So I made myself what was left from the steak on Monday, yellow pepper, carrot, avocado and a little bit of smoked salmon with a large glass of water. It definitely did the trick as I wasn't hungry until about 530pm.
We met up with one of my good girlfriends SP who also has a little girl E. She's a couple months younger then M. She had invited us to a photo shoot at the YMCA, were she worked before E. They were doing a photo shoot for a new compaign and needed families with kids. It started slow as S had just woken up from sleeping in the car and she was feeling a bit hungry. She is normally very outgoing, friendly and NOT shy at all but when she is tired and hungry the opposite happens. She gets clingy and likes to play the shy game. So we left her to it to wake up and have some food and within 20 minutes she was hamming it up for the camera. M was loving have lots of kiddies his age to play with. They both had a great time and I got to visit with one of my BF's, so it was a great afternoon.
After we got back in the car and drove to my hubby's parents place. They live close to the YMCA and had invited us over for dinner. Knowing I was eating differently they totally accomodated me and everything was delicious. We started with a smoke salmon, cream cheese and cracker appy of which I only ate the smoked salmon. The salmon was caught by a friend of ours recently and smoked. It was AMAZING. Dinner was at 6pm. We had chicken, potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. There was butter on the table but I avoided it and was content with a plain potato.
Once dinner finished S was on about going for a walk in the sunshine along the seawall. It was a gorgeous nite and we were definitely all up for a walk but we knew she was on a mission. She wanted an ice cream. So we walked to marble slab and she ordered a strawberry ice cream with sprinkles in a cone. She is amazing at how fast she can devour any food but when it's something she loves it's gone in seconds. After finishing hers, she was on about finishing her Meme's (grandma) ice cream which was chocolate and almond.
By this time it was 7pm and M was getting very tired as he was almost asleep in the stroller. I decided that as soon as we got back to their house we would be on our way home.
We got home by about 830pm. I put the kids straight to bed and curled up the couch to watch a movie and wait for my hubby to get home from work, which he did at 930pm.
Day 3 was a great day.
On to Day 4!

Whole30 Day 2

Sorry I have been slow about getting out my days of progress. I need to make sure I do it every night or else I will get way behind as I am today.
Day 2, Tuesday, was a good day. I was feeling pretty strong still about the whole thing and wasn't bothered too much by my cravings.
The day started early. I was up with my little man at 630am and playing on the floor. My daughter S got up at 7am and we started breakfast. She started with rice crispies as I prepared our scrambled eggs with yellow pepper and shallot. Once our eggs were ready I plated our food. I had 2 scrambled eggs with yellow pepper and shallot, as well as, more yellow pepper and half an avocado. Along side was a large glass of water. It was yummy!
After breaky, we played until my hubby got up at 830am and I decided I needed to go back to bed and get a little more sleep, as I was feeling quite exhausted. I slept for an hour and a half waking up around 10am. It's been along time since I've had an early morning nap but I'm trying to listen to my body this month and I desperately needed it.
At noon, we had some lunch. I think because I had been more prepared with eating fat this morning I was able to last longer without eating my next meal. For lunch, I had smoked salmon, some steak from the night before and lots of veggie cut up. I love smoked salmon, so was quite excited to sit down and eat it.
Once lunch was finished M woke up from his nap and we went out in the car. We have been doing some research about ordering chicken from a farm. I finally found one I was pretty sure I wanted to go with. So I put the kids in the car and we went to our local grocery store to compare prices. I wanted to see how comparable the prices were with the farm. It turns out the farm was at least .70$ cheaper on everything if not more. This was quite exciting as we decided to order some free range local farm chicken. We will be picking up 2 whole chickens, 6lbs of chicken breast and 4lbs of turkey breast on Sept 22 from K&M farms. Can't wait to taste the incredible chicken!
We then carried onto my parents house and planned on going for a walk with my mom. But, my dad was home and he didn't want to go for a walk and wanted to go to get a coffee instead. This excited S because she loves our local coffee shop Localz and the wonderful ladies that run it. I must say I was quite proud of myself, I was able to sit there with my glass of water while everyone had something delicious. S decided she wanted a chocolate chip, banana, peanut butter muffin....they are so yummy! My dad had a smoked montreal sandwich on rye, that look awesome too. But, I had had my lunch and wasn't feeling hungry plus I didn't need it.
That night we ate dinner late. I started making dinner after the kids had gone to sleep which was about 7pm. So I didn't actually sit down for dinner till 8pm. I was excited about dinner though. I had planned on making Moroccan chicken which I had seen my cousin make the night before. Thanks J! The chicken was delicious with roasted zucchini and green beans.
Here's what I noticed on day 2: I subconsciously put things in my mouth that I don't even realize. When I helped S take her muffin out of the wrapper and got chocolate on my hands I licked it off. When I make S a peanut butter sandwich I eat the rest of the peanut butter off the knife. When I make a bowl of crackers for S to snack on I automatically take one. So I have been trying to be very conscious and aware when making things for S, so I don't put anything in my mouth. It's hard with kids....But I CAN DO THIS.
On to Day 3!
